The Dom Tower in Utrecht, Netherlands

Utrecht is the capital and most populous city in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is the fourth largest city of the Netherlands with a population of 327,834 on 1 November 2013.

The Dom Tower (Domtoren) is the most prominent structure in Utrecht. It stands at the spot where the city of Utrecht originated almost 2,000 years ago.  The Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands at 112.5 metres in height and the Gothic-style tower is the symbol of the city. The tower was part of the Cathedral of Saint Martin, Utrecht, also known as Dom Church, and was built between 1321 and 1382. The cathedral was never fully completed due to lack of money. In 1674 a tornado destroyed the unfinished nave but the tower was undamaged. The remaining section of the church and the tower were never reconnected, and a street and Domplein square now separate the two structures. The floorplan of the missing section is shown by the multicoloured paving of the square.
