SW AT-065 Turku, the oldest city in Finland

Turku is a city on the southwest coast of Finland at the mouth of the Aura River in the region of Finland Proper (Varsinais-Suomi). Turku, as a town, was settled during the 13th century and founded most likely at the end of the 13th century, making it the oldest city in Finland. For a time 1809-1812, Turku was the capital of Finland. Today it remains a regional capital and an important business and cultural centre.

As of 31 January 2014, Turku’s population was 182,281, making it the sixth largest city in Finland. There are more than 300 thousand inhabitants living in the Turku sub-region, ranking it as the third largest urban area in Finland. 

This postcard shows Turku Castle which dates back to the 1280s. At the castle, visitors can see the two interesting dungeons and the magnificent banquet halls. The smaller panels of the postcard shows views of the river Aura which runs through the city centre and other scenes of Turku.
