NL-2747093 Kasteel Vorden

Kasteel Vorden (Castle Vorden) is located in Vorden which was previously a municipality in Gelderland Province of The Netherlands.  These days Vorden is part of the municipailty of Bronckhorst.
Kasteel Vorden probably dates from the 13th century but the present-day structure is very different from the original building.  The square tower was certainly part of the medieval building, but the castle, as we see it now, for the most part, was built in the 16th century.  In the 13th century, a square shape for a castle was common, typically a walled courtyard with a drawbridge.  in the course of centuries, the castle lost its defensive function and was rebuilt in the 19th century as a mansion.  In 1873, the entrance was placed on the northern wing with a wooden bridge over the moat.
These days Kasteel Vorden accepts paying guests and offer tours to see “authentic attractively furnished rooms, secret passages, towers and vaults” as well as “the beautiful antique furniture, paintings, sculptures, carvings, porcelain, etc. from the 17th -19th  centuries”.
This postcard showing the castle in winter came from Elsa (26 November 2014) Postcrossing.
